Aldi tops list of supermarkets stocking most sustainable seafood
Nearly 80 per cent of Aldi's seafood range is environmentally friendly, and you'll never guess which supermarkets sells the least blue label fish

WHEN you are enjoying your fish supper it can be easy not to think about where your seafood comes from.
But, buying sustainably caught fish locally or in the supermarket can help keep our oceans healthy, and all you have to do is look out for the blue label.
Now, Aldi have taken first plaice in a new list of sustainable seafood stocked in supermarkets, leaving its rivals floundering...
Only five per cent of Morrisons' and Iceland's seafood range is sustainable putting them in last, while Marks and Spencer came in third-last with only 19 per cent of their seafood being sustainable.
Sustainable seafood means that the fish you are eating has been caught in smaller numbers to leave enough fish in the ocean, respect their habitats and ensure that the people who catch your fish can maintain their livelihoods.
You can tell if the seafood you are buying is sustainable by looking for the blue label in shops.
Fish sold in shops get their blue label from the Marine Stewardship Council.
The list of sustainable seafood stocked in supermarkets comes from the Marine Stewardship Council.
The Marine Stewardship Council is an international organisation that sets the standards for sustainable fishing all around the world.
The international organisation also measures global fish stocks and makes sure that fisheries are producing enough sustainable fish.
MORE ON MONEY
Sainsburys had the most sustainably sourced seafood on sale.
But, as a percentage of all the seafood stocked, Aldi has the range with most blue label fish.
Julie Ashfield, managing director of Buying at Aldi UK said: “Our approach is to provide our customers with fresh, sustainably sourced fish and this is reflected in the MSC’s findings."
"Customers know that shopping at Aldi means they can enjoy quality, responsibly sourced products, at affordable prices.”
The German discount supermaket also reckon that Aldi staff scan your shopping 40 per cent faster because workers are encouraged to be speedy.
MSC programme director, Toby Middleton said: "If you’re buying MSC labelled fish or seafood in one of these top five supermarkets, you’re helping to make a positive difference to the world's oceans."
"While most of us don’t have the time to read up on sustainable sourcing - we don’t have to. The blue fish label means the ‘science bit’ has been done for you. Our league table shows that retailers are offering their customers clear labelling and the chance to make a difference, helping to protect fish stocks for our children and our grandchildren.”
Aldi have also launched a new range of cocktails in a can that cost just 85p each.
