John Lewis appoints its first female boss in department store’s 152-year history
Former trainee Paula Nickolds will replace the department store's current managing director Andy Street in January

DEPARTMENT store chain John Lewis yesterday appointed the first woman boss in its 152-year history.
Paula Nickolds, 43, who joined as a graduate trainee 22 years ago, will replace Andy Street as managing director in January.
It continues a tradition at the upmarket retailer — effectively owned by staff, or “partners” — of appointing an MD from within.
Commercial director Paula said yesterday: “I’m immensely excited. As a partner with 22 years’ service, I know just how special the John Lewis Partnership is.”
Married Paula, from Hertfordshire, joined in 1994 after studying history at university.
