British school to introduce ‘gender neutral’ uniforms including skirts for boys following surge in transgender students

Posh north London school's proposed policy aims to give kids the freedom to question their gender identity

A PRIVATE school in north London has revealed plans to introduce “gender neutral” uniforms.

The policy would allow boys to wear skirts as a way to tackle gender identity issues early on, following a sharp rise in transgender students.

Highgate School, which sets parents back £6,790 per term, has pledged to bring the new rules in after being pressured to make the changes by equality groups.

Currently, only girls are permitted to wear both the school’s grey pleated skirts and grey trousers.

Boys under 16 would also be able to don earrings at school for the first time under the plans.

Other policies up for consideration include the introduction of gender-neutral bathrooms, and a ban on certain phrases.

Kids at the school are already allowed to choose what gender they would like to be referred to as, and a male pupil at the school has previously been permitted to wear a dress.

In an interview with the, headmaster Adam Pettitt explained the decision: “This generation is really questioning [if we are] being binary in the way we look at things.”

The proposed policy change comes following a rise in young people looking to change genders.

According to the Sunday Times, over 2,000 under-18s were referred to the Gender Identity Clinic at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trusts in north London last year.

Parents will be consulted before a decision is made.
