THE TRANSGENDER model Munroe Bergdorf has resigned as a Labour LGBT adviser after “homophobic” tweets were unearthed.

But the 29-year-old tried to blame media “attacks” for her being forced to step down, despite being found to have mocked someone as a "hairy barren lesbian" and "butch lezza" and tweeted about the desire to "gay bash" a TV star.

Quitting this morning from her role with Dawn Butler, the shadow equalities secretary, she hit out at newspapers for stoking “relentless online abuse”.

Ms Bergdorf became the first transgender model to take a lead role in a L’Oreal campaign last year, appearing alongside stars including Cheryl.

But she was sacked when it emerged she had slammed all white people as racist, said the suffragettes were “white supremacists” who wanted to deny black people the vote, and described gay Tories as “a special kind of d**khead”.

Despite that she was appointed to the role with the Labour party on its new LGBT+ Advisory Panel, and posed with its leader Jeremy Corbyn last week.

She wrote at the time she would “help form and push through fairer and more effective policy change", but was forced to apologise after a string of homophobic comments sent from her Twitter account were unearthed by .

They included telling a friend: "How's your barren womb? We all know your little secret … hairy lesbian!"

She also criticised a singer on television, saying: "You have to admit she did look like a butch LEZZA tho."

The DJ from London wrote that a character on the American TV show Glee was so "annoying" that: "Even I'd like to gay bash him!"

Ms Bergdorf said in a statement: “In 2010 I hadn’t yet transitioned and was outwardly presenting and identifying as an effeminate gay male.

“Tweets were juvenile jokes made with friends […] however they were in bad taste and certainly not reflective of who I am today at 31 years old.

“I’m not going to try and excuse them, as there is really no excuse.”

But there were a slew of calls for her to resign or be sacked from the role, including Nigel Evans, a gay Tory MP, who said: "I'm absolutely shocked. I don't know which community she's representing but it is certainly not mine."

And today she revealed she would be stepping down, with a statement on Twitter saying: “Following last week's exciting announcement that I had accepted a place on an LGBT advisory board assembled to offer counsel to Dawn Butler, the Labour party's women and equalities minister, it is with great sadness that I have decided to step down.

"This is a decision that I've had to make due to endless attacks on my character by the conservative right wing press and relentless online abuse.”

She added: “I won't let this continue to be a distraction or stand in the way of the LGBT+ panel's success.”

But responding to the resignation the Conservatives’ deputy chairman James Cleverly said: “Munroe Bergdorf shows no contrition or self awareness.

“Blames the media for reporting the vile comments that she has made over a number of years.

“My criticism of her was based solely on what she said, not who she is.
