LEICESTER captain Wes Morgan has signed a new deal to keep him with the Premier League champions until the end of the 2019 season.

Morgan, 32, was an ever present in Claudio Ranieri's side last season as the Foxes shocked football by winning the title.

And his decision to commit his future to the club will come as a welcome boost as Leicester attempt to fight off the loss of their key people this summer.

Morgan - who played in the club's 2-1 pre-season friendly win over Oxford on Tuesday night - has joined striker Jamie Vardy in agreeing improved terms, but the club were hit by the loss of influential midfielder N'Golo Kante to Chelsea in a £30million move.

They have also seen Steve Walsh - the man responsible for bringing Kante, Vardy and Riyad Mahrez to the King Power Stadium - quit to become Director of Football at Everton.

And there are still fears they may lose PFA Player of the Year Mahrez this summer with Manchester City and Chelsea both tracking the wide man.

So Morgan's decision to put pen to paper on a new contract will come as a welcome boost to Ranieri as he attempts to build a squad capable of defending the title and embarking on a Champions League campaign.

Morgan said: “To commit my future to Leicester City is a wonderful feeling.

"Everyone knows how I feel about playing for this Club and with my teammates, so I’m proud to have the chance to carry on wearing the shirt long term.

“Lifting that Premier League trophy was a moment I will never forget and it’s still sinking in.

"Now we’ve got to give it everything to defend it as well as showing what we can do in the Champions League.
“We all know that what we’ve got in that dressing room is something special, so I can’t wait to get the new season started with the boys so we can once again give it our best for each other and for our fantastic supporters.”
