Rio Olympics 2016: Adam Peaty wins gold in 100m breaststroke to seal Team GB’s first medal

ADAM PEATY won Olympic 100m breaststroke gold as he destroyed the field with a stunning world record display.
Peaty romped home in a brilliant 57.13 seconds with one of the most impressive swimming displays ever seen.
The 21-year-old started as clear favourite after scorching to a new world record in his opening heat.
Uttoxeter born Peaty came into the race more than a second quicker than his nearest rivals and held his nerve under the pressure to scorch to victory.
It was a stunning display of pace, technique and power that cemented his place as one of the stars of world swimming.
He becomes the first British male to be crowned Olympic champion since Adrian Moorhouse won the same event back in 1988.
The win secured the first medal of any kind for Team GB in Brazil after two frustrating days.

They had seen hopes of a podium place in the men's cycling road race when Geraint Thomas crashed out close to the end.
World champion Lizzie Armitstead also missed out in the women's road race when she could finish only fifth on Sunday morning.
And fencer Richard Kluse was denied a medal in the foil as he lost out in the bronze match to Russian Timur Safin.
