Netflix also added the announcement to its under the Netflix Features section.

"Netflix will no longer be available on Apple TV (2nd generation) and Apple TV (3rd generation) after July 31, 2024," the company wrote.

Apple Insider noted that as of now, Apple's Home Sharing, AirPlay, and apps still work on its older TVs.

According to Apple Insider, the second generation Apple TV was released in September 2010, followed by the third generation in 2012.

Both devices used "an offshoot" of iOS.

The fourth generation includes tvOS and an App Store.

Apple TV 4K launched on November 4, 2022, and "is effectively the seventh generation of Apple TV hardware, not counting an incredibly minor hardware revision in the third generation."

The newest model is "the third unit capable of 4K."

The first-generation Apple TV, which "ran a variant of OS X," is "long gone."

According to , its products "are considered obsolete" when the company "stopped distributing them for sale more than 7 years ago."

REDDIT REACTION

Netflix and Apple TV customers have taken to Reddit to share their thoughts on the move in a "Netflix is finally killing off support for 2nd and 3rd generation Apple TVs."

"That sucks considering you still can't jailbreak those and run plex on them," one user wrote.

"Dam*, time to finally retire my high school graduation present," another commented.

"Oof I know plenty of people that still have these as their main way to watch Netflix, they will be bummed," a third said, in part.

"I know most here will say 'it's been supported for a long time, they are really old.' I get it, it's a service. Still sucks to create more e-waste (and expenses) just because you have to buy a new device that will be used exactly the same way the old one was, compared to a 20 year old blu-ray player which still works fine with new movies."

"Wait what? are you Kidding me?" a fourth user wrote.
