Holly explained to viewers: "We totally understand the reaction. Please know that we would never jump a queue."

However fans did not accept their explanation that they entered Westminster Hall and kept to "the edges" of the room and "did not file past the Queen's coffin."

One viewer tweeted: "Pathetic excuse. The 3 of them @hollywills @Schofe #MartinFrizell seen a loophole to jump the queue. Since when do any of them go to an outside filming piece. Lost the last bit of trust they had with the viewers @itv #ThisMorning @thismorning"

Another raged: "They still Queue jumped. 'we would never jumped the queue' my a**e. They are not broadcasters, This morning is a talk show. Susanna Reid is a broadcaster for GMB and she waited hours like the rest of us. Holly and Phil have no shame, it’s a disgrace."

As a third typed: "Well, one for the 'Sorry if you thought it was wrong' scrapbook. S**t explanation, they aren't even journalists, it's a magazine programme, no need to be there at all, let alone jump in."

One more person wanted to know: "So if the media area was outside the hall, as you showed in your report, why did Holly and Phil need to go through the hall and passed the Queen's coffin in order to reach it?"

And a fifth reasoned: "We know Holly and Phil didn't take anyone's space to see the Queen because they were never in the queue but that was never the point, they still didn't have to queue to be there however they try to spin it .."

Others said the pair should have apologised.

They fumed: "Have I heard an apology NO… Have i heard B******t excuses... YES ! Come on @thismorning @hollywills @Schofe Own up to what people are so angry about stop the crap and for it to be prerecorded was poor #ThisMorning #queuejumpers"

This Morning addressed the backlash over a montage of emotional TV moments from the Queen's period of mourning.

One clip from inside Westminster Hall and didn't show show Holly pr Phil as they walked through the media gallery.

Over the footage Holly told viewers: "Like hundreds of accredited broadcasters and journalists we were given official permission to access the hall. It was strictly for the purpose of reporting on the event for millions of people in the UK who haven’t been able to visit Westminster in person.

"The rules were that we would be quickly escorted around the edges to a platform at the back. In contrast those paying respects walked along a carpeted area inside the coffin and were given time to pause.

"None of the broadcasters and journalists took anyone's places in the queue and no one filed past the Queen.

"We of course respected those rules however we realised that it may have looked like something else and therefore we totally understand the reaction.

"Please know that we would never jump a queue."

A clip followed from outside Westminster Hall as Phil reflected on his visit and said: "That's got to be one of the most profound moments of my life."

A petition for Phillip and Holly to be sacked has now passed OVER 14,000 signatures.

At the moment a total of 14, 578 people have signed it - and they are not far off their goal of 15, 000 signatures.

When it reaches 15, 000 it will become one of the top signed petitions on the non-profit petition website.

This Morning has insisted that the pair "did not jump the queue" to see the Queen's coffin.

A statement on the programme’s official Instagram account said: “Hello everyone, we would like to clarify something. We asked Phillip and Holly to be part of a film for this Tuesday’s programme.

“They did not jump the queue, have VIP access or file past the Queen lying in state – but instead were there in a professional capacity as part of the world’s media to report on the event.”

Many famous faces have also given their opinion on the matter.

Susanna ReidEamonn Holmes and Huw Stevens have all taken swipes at the pair.

Meanwhile The Chase star Anne Hegerty defended them both and called the Twitter trolls "extremely rude".
