Kate Middleton leads the stars as La La Land clears up at the BAFTAs 2017 with five gongs

The hit musical film walked away with the most gongs on the night as the Duchess of Cambridge led the glamorous arrivals

LA La Land won big at the 2017 BAFTAs - walking away with five gongs at the swanky ceremony on Sunday evening.

Kate Middleton, Viola Davis and Nicole Kidman led the glamour stakes as the stars hit the red carpet at London's Royal Albert Hall.

Many of the stars on the night could not resist using their moment on the EE Bafta podium to talk politics — with many taking a swipe at US President Donald Trump.

Viola Davis - who won Best Supporting Actress for her role in Fences - hit back at him for calling Meryl Streep “overrated”.

Leading Actress winner Emma Stone also used her acceptance speech to make a political statement, calling on the world to “come together”.

Big names in the audience including Meryl and Andrew Garfield cheered as winners ditched the traditional thank-you speeches.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge got the loudest reception as they walked onto the red carpet.

Arriving just after 7pm, the couple strolled up the iconic steps of the Royal Albert Hall and waved to their fans and well-wishers.

La La Land walked away with the most accolades on the night, winning Best Director, Best Film, Best Cinematography, Best Original Music and Best Leading Actress for Emma.

A recent poll by Cineworld revealed that four in ten people believed La La Land should win the Best Film gong. However, 43% of the cinema chain’s Unlimited Card members believed Deadpool should have been one of the films in the running against La La Land.

The evening's proceedings came off to a seemingly rocky start for the film's leading lady however, as she was caught up in a seemingly awkward interview with Zoe Ball.

Although the BBC host tried to soldier, Emma, 28, spent most of the interview looking completely bemused.

Sadly Emma's La La Land co-star Ryan Gosling could not attend the ceremony.

Although the 36-year-old's name was down on the attendees list on the evening, BAFTA organisers later revealed he had been called away on a “family matter”.

A spokesperson said: “Ryan had a family matter to attend to, he is sorry not to be here this evening.”

“He sends his appreciation and thanks for everything.”

Master of ceremonies Stephen Fry did a superb job of keeping the audience and nominees entertained on the evening.

As well as poking fun at Prince William for being “related to Danny Dyer”, the TV veteran also put on a very passionate display with Meryl Streep.

Greeting the 67-year-old actress in the audience, Stephen walked up to her and gave her a huge kiss.

Meryl appeared to be delighted by his gesture, grabbing the back of his head with both her hands and pulling him in close.

Afterwards she appeared slightly overwhelmed - holding her hand to her chest and beaming at him.

Best Leading Actor winner Dev Patel brought his whole family along to the ceremony.

As he picked up his gong for his role in Lion, he became overcome with emotion.

Earlier on in the evening, Dev revealed the bizarre methods he'd used to perfect his Australian accent for the film.

Dev said: “To change the way I sound, that took a good eight months.

“It was eight months of solid repetition [and] I watched a lot of Australian Masterchef!”

His Lion co-star Nicole Kidman led the trend of plunging necklines on the night.

Despite fashionistas loving her look, it seems Nicole's children weren't keen.

She said “It's too low. If they'd had their say I wouldn't have been allowed out in it because it's low cut!

“They would have gone, 'No, mum. That's a rude dress.'

“They like me more in dresses that make me look like a fairy or a princess.”

Tom Holland picked up BAFTA’s EE Rising Star Award and gave emotional acceptance speech which had the audience in hysterics as he snubbed his parents.

He said: “Wow, it's amazing to be up here.

“I want to two people, sorry mum and dad, it's not you.

“I won't thank all the actors, directors and agents because you get thanked enough and get paid pretty well too.

“I want to thank to two acting coaches Nick and Ben. Without you I would be standing here today.”

It was only the second time the awards have been held at the Royal Albert Hall.

In previous years it has been held at the Royal Opera House, which is currently undergoing refurbishment.
