Viola Davis - who won Best Supporting Actress for her role in Fences - hit back at him for calling Meryl Streep “overrated”.
Leading Actress winner Emma Stone also used her acceptance speech to make a political statement, calling on the world to “come together”.
Big names in the audience including Meryl and Andrew Garfield cheered as winners ditched the traditional thank-you speeches.

A recent poll by Cineworld revealed that four in ten people believed La La Land should win the Best Film gong. However, 43% of the cinema chain’s Unlimited Card members believed Deadpool should have been one of the films in the running against La La Land.
The evening's proceedings came off to a seemingly rocky start for the film's leading lady however, as she was caught up in a seemingly awkward interview with Zoe Ball.
Although the BBC host tried to soldier, Emma, 28, spent most of the interview looking completely bemused.

Although the 36-year-old's name was down on the attendees list on the evening, BAFTA organisers later revealed he had been called away on a “family matter”.
A spokesperson said: “Ryan had a family matter to attend to, he is sorry not to be here this evening.”
“He sends his appreciation and thanks for everything.”
