ELTON John's pal Paul Gambaccini has revealed the icon's pain over his feud with the late George Michael.
The DJ claims the pair fell out when the legendary singer issued George with a "warning" about his drug use.
The pair publicly fell out in 2004 when Sir Elton admitted that George was in a 'strange place' after the Rocket Man singer's attempt to help George clean up his act.
According to , BBC Radio DJ Paul explained: "Elton was very upset, we exchanged emails."
“I thought he would have come back from being a stoner."
He added: “Logic says: ‘OK, lets step back’. But instead he went on. That involved the new people in his life at the time.”

Sir Elton's grief since the passing of George has been clear during the touching tributes he paid to his former collaborator in radio shows and on stage in recent months.
George passed away peacefully on Christmas Day last year and his untimely death prompted an outpouring of grief from heartbroken fans and the star’s famous friends.
Thames Valley Police said an ambulance attended the singer’s home property in Goring, Oxfordshire, at 1.42pm on Christmas Day, adding that his death was being treated as “unexplained but not suspicious”.
He was was found dead in bed by his boyfriend Fadi Fawaz.
Senior coroner Darren Salter said the pop legend suffered from dilated cardiomyopathy with myocarditis and fatty liver and died of natural causes.
The verdict was delayed until March 7 as the coroner awaited the results of toxicology tests – a wait which left funeral plans on hold.
It is believed George will be buried along his mother in the family's private plot in Highgate Cemetery.
