Who is Joni Mitchell?

Born on November 7, 1943, Joni Mitchell hails from Alberta, Canada.

While Joni's mother was a school teacher, her father worked for the Royal Canadian Air Force as a flight lieutenant responsible for instructing new pilots out of Fort Macleod.

Following World War II, her father worked as a local grocer.

Joni was diagnosed with polio at nine and spent weeks in the hospital. Although the disease weakened her hands, Joni taught herself the ukulele and guitar.

Joni graduated from Aden Bowman Collegiate and attended art classes at the Saskatoon Technical Collegiate under expressionist painter Henry Bonli.

She also spent time at the Alberta College of Art during the 1960s.

In February of 1965, Joni gave birth to Kelly Dale Anderson, who she put up for adoption. The two were reunited for the first time over 30 years later, in 1997.
