Did Levi Bellfield kill Lin and Megan Russell? Horror case one of dozens now linked to the jailed monster

COPS believe Milly Dowler's murderer could be behind a string of unsolved attacks

EVIL Levi Bellfield’s confession to the killing of schoolgirl Milly Dowler has
sparked police to launch new probes into a string of unsolved attacks.

Up to 25 cases are now being linked to ex bouncer Bellfield including the
horror hammer murders of Lin Russell and her six-year-old daughter Megan in
1996.

Police have refused to say which cases they are now looking into but it’s
understood he’s linked to crimes across the country.

Psychopath Michael Stone was twice convicted of killing Lin and Megan as well
as attacking her other daughter Josie leaving her with horrific injuries.

Stone has always denied the killings, which happened at Chillenden, Kent, with
his lawyers claiming there’s plenty of evidence to link Bellfield to the
murders.

They say Bellfield bears a remarkable likeness to an e-fit issued at the time
of the killings, compiled with the help of brave Josie.

The Russells were attacked at a similar time of day to Milly, who was abducted
as she walked home from school.

Stone, a heroin addict and armed robber with a long history of mental illness,
was convicted in 1998 and given three life sentences.

Those convictions were quashed on appeal in February 2001 after a key witness
admitted lying and a retrial was ordered.

But in October that year a jury at Nottingham Crown Court again found Stone
guilty. He lost a second battle to overturn his convictions.

Bellfield was also linked to several attacks on women in which blunt
instruments were used.

Burly Bellfield has been telling all about unsolved murders, abductions and
sexual assaults whilst in prison, according to The Times.

It’s now believed Bellfield – who calls himself Yusuf Rahim after converting
to Islam – will be spoken to by officers probing a number of cases.

When he was jailed for Milly’s murder in 2011, the police admitted Bellfield
may have been responsible for around 20 unsolved attacks and date rapes on
women, dating back to 1980.

The killing of Judith Gold, who was hit over the head in Hampstead, north
London, in 1990, could also be re-examined.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed it was looking at new information relating
to criminal investigations.

A spokesman said: “The MPS is liaising with a number of other UK police forces
in relation to information which has been passed on to us regarding a number
of criminal investigations. That information remains subject to assessment
and for that reason we will not be discussing the matter in further detail
at this time.

“We are not prepared to discuss at this time the number of investigations or
details of any case.”

Bellfield finally confessed to abducting, raping and murdering Milly during an
investigation into whether he had an accomplice, Surrey Police said
yesterday.

The confession to police – which Milly’s family said had left them
‘devastated’ – comes five years after Bellfield received a whole life
sentence for the teenager’s 2002 murder.

Milly was snatched from the street while on her way from school to her home in
Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, in March 2002.

Bellfield, who has been described as one of Britain’s most dangerous killers,
was already in jail for the murders of Amelie Delagrange and Marsha
McDonnell, and the attempted murder of Kate Sheedy, when he went on trial at
the Old Bailey accused of killing Milly.

In 2008 he was handed a whole life term for murdering Ms McDonnell, 19, in
2003 and murdering Ms Delagrange, 22, and attempting to murder Ms Sheedy,
18, in 2004.
