DEAR DEIDRE: WE found out yesterday my granddad has got prostate cancer. It was a big shock.

He is 79 but has always seemed healthy and full of life.

We are a small, close family and I always spent a lot of time with my grandparents when I was growing up because my parents worked long hours.

I am a girl of 22 and I am devastated. I can’t stop crying and I don’t know how I can carry on if I lose him. He is a big part of my life.

DEIDRE SAYS: I get your shock but this type of cancer is not necessarily life-threatening.

Spend as much time as you can with your granddad and tell him how much you love him. Focus on doing fun things together while he waits for a more detailed diagnosis.
