DECKING can cost thousands of pounds.

And the reality is, in five to 10 years, it can be weathered and worn to the point of needing replacing again.

So gardeners are looking for cheaper and more durable alternatives.

Anne O'Neill posted a couple of photos in the Facebook group "Ikea tips, hacks and more!" of her decking.

It was weathered, in need of a good scrub and repaint.

But Anne had other ideas and headed to her nearest IKEA and grabbed a couple of packs of Runnen Floor Decking.

The product description for the decking tiles reads: “You can upgrade your balcony or terrace in an instant and also section off an area for lounging and for dining.

“It’s easy to install and clicks together.

“The floor decking is weather-resistant and easy to care for since it’s made of plastic.

“The floor decking can be cut if you need to fit it around a corner or a pole.

“You can easily take the floor decking apart and put it together again if you want to clean the floor underneath.

“Choose one colour or mix and match.”

Garden furniture - dupe or designer?

There are six colour ways to choose from: Acacia, artificial grass, beige, brown stained, dark grey, and textile dark grey.

Anne chose the dark grey to match the balcony railing and the transformation was amazing.

The post has been liked by 4.4k people, and it has received many comments.

Someone said: “Oo this looks really good.”

Another simply commented: “Wow.”

One noticed: “Interesting how it makes the narrow balcony appear wider. Looks great.”

Several other gardeners shared images of their own outside spaces and gardens that had been transformed with the same tiles.

The Runnen Floor Decking has also received glowing reviews on IKEA’s website.

Rating it five stars, someone wrote: "Wow! What a difference it made to my tired decking.

"Just click together, makes a nice pattern - will probably need to treat it every year to protect it from the Scottish weather.”

Someone else’s review read: “The runnen looks great put on top of of tired decking, very easy to lay.

“I will put a clear varnish on to give extra protection, it might look expensive but worth it.”

Another read: “These are the best tiles ever they have transformed my old deck into a beautiful area that is so amazing!

"Thank you IKEA you have made my summer.”

The tiles are £16.50/0.81 m², which is cheaper than traditional wood decking, but can add up if you have a large space to cover.
