How can I tell if an egg is fresh or has gone bad without breaking it?

NOBODY wants to crack open an egg only to find it's gone off.
And while you can usually use your eyes and nose to sense if the food in your fridge is past its best, it can be hard to tell with eggs.
How can you tell if an egg has gone off?
A handy trick has been revealed that lets you test whether an egg is still edible, without having to crack it open and endure the smell.
The trick is to fill a bowl with cold water and place the eggs in it.
You'll probably have heard that if an egg rises to the top it's gone off.
But you can also tell which are still edible, but should be cooked as soon as possible.
How can you tell which eggs are the freshest?
When eggs are very fresh, they will sink to the bottom and lay on their sides.
If they're a week or so old, they will still sink to the bottom of the bowl, but the bulbous end of the egg will slowly rise up.
When over three weeks old, the egg will balance on the pointy end, with the fat side pointing upwards.
Any bad eggs won't touch the bottom of the bowl at all, in fact, they'll be floating along the surface of the water.
What will happen if you eat a bad egg?
Contaminated eggs are often undetectable.
Some side effects to eating a bad egg include stomach aches and sickness, fever and/or an upset stomach for up to 72 hours.
It is always a good idea to test eggs out before using them to avoid getting sick.
This nifty trick takes no time at all and means you can eat in confidence.
