Fancy putting in an offer? The infamous ‘haunted’ Amityville Horror house where a family was murdered is on sale for £585,000

It is described as a 'stately centre hall colonial' but there is no mention of the horrors of the real-life mass murder that took place in 1974

AMITYVILLE HOUSE

THE house made famous by 1979 movie chiller The Amityville Horror is up for sale in New York - ghosts not included.

Described as a "stately centre hall colonial" , the five-bedroom property is on the market for $850,000 (around £585, 000).

The estate on 108 Ocean Avenue in Amityville - originally 112 but changed to deter gawpers - boasts a four-bathroom abode with a large boat house and a two-car garage.

At present there are no pictures from the ad showing any interiors of the property, but inside snaps were released when the house was previously put on the market in 2012.

There is also no mention of the horrors of the real-life mass murder that took place in 1974.

A couple and their four children were shot dead by eldest son Ronald DeFeo Jr as they slept in their beds.

The victims were identified as Ronald DeFeo Sr, 43, his wife, Louise, 42, two sons, John, 9, and Mark, 12, and two daughters, Allison, 13, and Dawn 18.

DeFeo Jr was taken into the station for his own protection but the following day he confessed to the murders of all his family.

The crime spawned a book and a series of movies that chronicled various supernatural horrors, including visions of walls oozing slime, moving furniture and a visit from a demonic pig.

Famous 1979 film The Amityville Horror and its 2005 remake are based on the Lutz family’s brief stay in the house in 1975.

They moved into the house shortly after the murders of the DeFeo family and claimed to have experienced various supernatural incidents.

Reportedly, the water mysteriously turned black, doors would slam and nasty smells would fill the house. The family also claimed they heard footsteps running throughout the house and saw ghostly figures.

One of the Lutz children, Missy, apparently made a friend with one of the apparitions, called Josie, and she was ominously told "you'll live here forever".

After the series of spooky events, the family eventually vacated the house.

The original 1979  film stars James Brolin and Margot Kidder.

It spawned many remakes, most notably the 2005 movie starring Ryan Reynold, and it was based on the novel of the same name by Jay Anson.

The property's current owner is Caroline D’Antonio, whose husband, David, passed away last year - which has nothing to do with the house.

Estate agent Jerry O'Neil told  that the D’Antonio couple enjoyed their time at the home, but it wasn't necessarily quiet due to the popularity of the property.

He also told the : "I'm very familiar with the house. A friend of mine from high school, his family owned it. I spent a lot of time in this house as a kid. It’s a beautiful home."

The broker added that he has no idea how long the house, which was built in 1927, will take to sell.

He added: "The only horror about this house was that a family was murdered."

Neighbours say gawpers still occasionally come by, mostly on Halloween.
