Not so for celebrities though, who tend to go the extra mile.
We're not talking about lavish gifts or public displays of affection, but something a bit more permanent.
Yes, hordes of the A-list seal the love deal with a prominent tattoo, but as Johnny Depp has shown it can be a decision they regret.
Following his split from his wife Amber Heard, Johnny has taken a little trip to the parlour to have some of his ink freshened up.
Chiefly, he had the word 'Slim', which is Amber's nickname, changed to 'Scum' across his knuckles.
This isn't the first time he's had to make a change either - when he was dating Winona Ryder in 1989 he had 'Winona Forever' etched on his arm.
Cue another visit to the tattoo artist when they split four years later, with Johnny now sporting the less romantic 'Wino Forever' in its place.

Long before she started dating Liam Payne, Cheryl was married to footballer Ashley Cole.
She marked the occasion by getting 'Mrs C' emblazoned on the back of her neck, something she probably could have done without when they split in 2010.
