‘If you think sex on the first night is right, then it is right’: First Dates’ Fred Sireix shares his tips on romance

The Maitre D' of matchmaking knows a thing or two about the dating game

AS the First Dates couples nervously eye each other over the crème brulee, Maitre D’ Fred Sirieix hovers discretely in the background.

But he knows a thing or two about love – thanks to a long career in the restaurant business and three years on the hit dating show.

Now the matchmaking Frenchman has spilled his top tips for romance – and revealed his very European attitude to sex on a first date.

He said: “There is no right or wrong. If you think it is right to have sex on the first date, then it is right. Two consenting adults can do what they want to do.

“People will say all sorts of things, like if you give in too easy it is not going to be good at the end. I think that is all rubbish. I say, if it feels good, do it!.”

The charming host – who greets nervous First Daters with a smooth smile and puts them at ease on the Channel 4 show – is soon to publish a book called book First Dates: The Art Of Love.

He revealed rules for romance on the first date are to look your date in the eye, leave the phone alone, be honest and polite and smell nice.

Oh, and order the oysters.

When not ushering couples to the table in the show, the 44-year-old runs the Michelin-starred Galvin at Windows, on the 28th floor of London’s Park Lane Hilton, where he says he frequently helps anxious boyfriend’s to propose.

He believes that love conquers all and says he can tell when a couple are made for each other.

He told the Daily Mail: “When it is right, you can almost cut it with a knife. It is so thick, you can see it. When it is wrong, pfff! It just melts into nothing.”

Fred - whose bon mots on the show have made him a celebrity in his own right – has two children from a 12 year relationship and still lives with their mother, even though they have split.

He is now in a new relationship and has previously admitted being in love five times himself.

He said: “I have had my heart broken many times and I am sure I have broken hearts, too. But if it happens, c’est la vie.

“You have got to take it and move on. People can think of me whatever they want but I am just a normal bloke. I am not the maître d’ of love or the love guru.”

First Dates: The Art Of Love is published by Viking in September.
