IT'S usually assumed that men want sex more than women - but a new study has revealed that might not be the case after all.

Researchers keen to challenge common sex stereotypes - including that women aren't interested in sex, have fewer orgasms and get emotionally attached after hooking up - found that women are actually hornier than men.

In fact, the 500 women surveyed by fertility app Kindara revealed that over 50 per cent of ladies aren't having as much sex as they'd like to.

On top of that, 75 per cent of those questioned admitted they wished they were getting it on over three times every week - while 13 per cent said they'd like to have sex more than six times a week.

Meanwhile, the assumption that women don't orgasm as often as men was debunked by the finding that 39 per cent of women climax at least once  during sex - while one in 10 enjoy multiple orgasms.

Commenting on the findings, researchers said:

Most women orgasm during each sexual encounter – many do so more than once.

"While we didn’t ask men how frequently they achieve orgasm, we did learn that 49% of women report orgasming at least once or even multiple times during each sexual encounter.

“Many other women report having orgasms often, but not every time they engage in sexual activity.

"And hey, sometimes orgasm isn’t the primary goal of sexual activity.

“A 1994 survey reported that 75% of men and 29% of women always have orgasms with their partner. Our findings indicate that in the twenty years since that study was conducted, more women are achieving orgasm during each sexual encounter.

“This positive change could indicate more equality in giving and receiving pleasure beneath the sheets.”

This research comes after it was revealed this week that 45 per cent of couples have sex just a handful of times every month.

A study conducted by the Kinsey Institute concluded that 18 to 29 year olds tend to get the most loving – at about 112 times per year - while those in their forties average around 69 sex sessions per year.
