A MUM who was tortured by vaginal pain has finally discovered what the cause was when she caught a piece of toilet paper on a strange object.
When Michelle Doig-Collins decided she no longer wanted to have children she underwent womb surgery to prevent her heavy periods.
The mum-of-three expected to have recovered from the fairly routine procedure in April but when she gradually started feeling worse, she decided to go back to the doctor.
After performing an internal examination, Michelle was diagnosed with a severe vaginal infection but 11 weeks later Michelle would find out what the real cause was.
Michelle, from Rancho Santa Margarita in California, said: “My toilet paper got caught on a metal probe."
She was then rushed to accident and emergency where an X-ray revealed the "huge" tip of a surgical instrument had been left inside her.
"This was put in me and when the instrument was taken out there was a huge piece missing," she told CBS news.
"How did no one see this? The last thing on my mind leaving that day was did they leave something in me."
Now, Michelle is preparing for a lawsuit after finding out from her solicitor that she could have been killed by the negligence.
Jeffery Greenman said: "She could have got sepsis or some other horrible infection."
Mr Greenman is now investigating how the surgical instrument was left inside her and finding out why it wasn't discovered sooner.
CBC said the centre that had performed the surgery had not responded to calls for comment.
