'It's boring without quirky acts'

Amanda Holden talks The X Factor’s Honey G and what happened at Simon Cowell’s birthday bash

The Fabulous columnist says she was appalled at the trolling Honey G suffered after getting a place in the live shows

LAST week, I was very flattered to receive an invite to Simon’s 57th birthday bash, and even though I’m having early nights while I’m rehearsing, of course I broke the rules for Mr Cowell!

It was a small dinner in a lovely Italian restaurant in London, just for family and close friends.

I sat with Nicole Scherzinger and Louis Walsh, who were plotting song choices for their X Factor acts.

After Simon’s partner Lauren made a beautiful birthday speech for him, Nicole sang Happy Birthday in Italian, opera-style.

She’s one talented lady, and what I love most is she has no filter – she says what she thinks!

I told Simon how appalled I was at the trolling of The X Factor’s Honey G after Sharon put her through to the live shows.

At the end of the day it’s an entertainment programme and it needs people like Honey G to make it fun.

The real talent will always rise to the surface, but without the quirky acts it would be boring.

Plus, what sort of example are we setting to children by bullying acts who are a bit different? It makes me really cross.

Lauren told me over dinner that their adorable little boy Eric, who’s now two, is loving kindergarten, and we’ve planned to go to The X Factor studios together to see the show being filmed soon.

I sneaked off at midnight before I turned into a pumpkin, but I’m sure the party carried on long after I left!

As it’s breast cancer awareness month, the Stepping Out girls and I had a little coffee morning last week to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Jessica McCluskey, who’s part of the cast, lost her mum to cancer two years ago, so it’s a cause close to her heart.

I’ve never forgotten the fear I felt after finding a lump in my breast back in 2010, even though it ended up being nothing sinister.

Lexi was just four at the time, and I had a very brief but terrifying insight into what a lot of women go through.

I now pay for an annual mammogram and I check my boobs religiously – as I hope you all do, too!
