From heart attack and Alzheimer’s to schizophrenia… this is what your handwriting says about your health

The size of your handwriting indicates your personality type, research says

JUST like a fingerprint, your handwriting is unique to you - but have you ever wondered what it says about your mental health?

It is not just a sign of your personality, handwriting can also be used to determine if you have high blood pressure, Alzheimer's, schizophrenia and Parkinson's disease, researchers claim.

The answer lies in the way your put pen to paper, according to research from the

The research claims to be able to determine health problems based on the way you write.

If you write with variable pressure, alternating between heavy and light pressure on the paper, then it is a possible indicator you have high blood pressure.

Whereas if you slant the letters in different directions in the same sentence you may have schizophrenia.

Meanwhile having very small and cramped handwriting could be a sign of Parkinson's disease.

Alzheimer's disease can also be detected in handwriting, researchers say, if the writing becomes irregular and there are trembles in the lettering.

Handwriting can also be an indicator of energy levels, according to the National Pen Company

How you space your letters, loop your L's, sign your name and even how you slant your letters can all act as a window into your personality.

The pattern of your scrawl can determine if you are an outgoing, people-orientated person, shy and withdrawn, or well-adjusted and adaptable.

The process of analysing handwriting is called graphology and can even be used for detecting lies.

It is an analysis of the brain's subconscious expression, according to the British Institute of Graphologists.

It's purpose is to give a realistic view on problems that confront people from all walks of life, every day of their lives, by giving an unbiased description of the personality and behaviour of a person.

But the analysis is referred to as being pseudoscientific, because there are debates around how accurately it can identify physical and mental health problems.

Yet is it still used by some employers during recruitment processes and is also used in court cases.

Other studies have also suggested that handwriting is a better learning tool than typing notes into a laptop.

Researchers at Princeton University and the University of California at Los Angeles found that students who took handwritten notes were more likely to outperform students who typed their notes.

People who write notes tend to learn better, retain information for longer and readily grasp new ideas.

The National Pen Company used a range of graphology studies to create an infographic explaining what your handwriting says about you.

According the the research, the size of your handwriting determines whether you are shy, outgoing or well-adjusted.

The spacing between your words means you are happy being on your own or need to be around people.

For example, if you have wide spaces between your words then you enjoy your freedom and don't like to be overwhelmed.

The slant in your letters determines whether you are logical, open to new experiences or you keep to yourself, while the was you shape your letters is an indicator of whether you are artistic and creative, aggressive and curious or logical and systematic.

The research also claims to be able to determine health problems based on the way you write.

The infographic also claims that handwriting can determine a persons energy levels.

Those who press the pen hard against paper have high energy levels, whereas those who write with a light pressure lack energy or are more tired.
