But how do other treats from the budget German store measure up to high-end options?

We went to London foodie hotspot Borough Market to see if hungry shoppers there preferred its artisan goodies to bargain-basement Aldi alternatives.

In a series of blind taste-tests, ten shoppers compared the market’s posh nosh with Aldi’s options, before telling us which ones preferred.

Only afterwards did we reveal which one was which.

The total cost of the nine items from Borough Market, including a bottle of champagne, was £87.35.

The equivalent items from cost just £24.41.

ZENA AMBROSE, 40, a charity PR from London, said: “Aldi’s is sweeter. I’m sure the Bollinger is more complex but Aldi’s option is a lot more drinkable.”

ANITA HAKIM, 66, a visiting retired uni administrator from New York, said: “I can tell the ones from the market are more expensive and higher quality but the Aldi ones taste much better. I would buy those every time.”

HAY AL-SADA, 37, a museum manager who lives in London, said: “The Aldi one tasted a lot fresher and cleaner. I couldn’t believe the price difference. I would have guessed it was the more expensive one.”

LONDON sales and marketing executive Simon Balfrey, 24, said: “This is a good example of why it’s sometimes worth paying more.

"The ones from Aldi are  grey and horrible-looking, whereas those from the market look colourful and fresh.”

RETIRED university administrator Robert Hakim, 67, on holiday from New York, said: “I love chocolate, I can smell it when it’s in the house.

"The Aldi version does not measure up. The truffles from Borough Market are silky and delicious.”

LONDON chef Bassam Al-Aiawi, 29, said: “I was shocked to find out the better prawns were from Aldi. They had a great texture, tasted fresh and were not too salty. Perfect.”
