Local media reports a closing down sign has been put on the cafe doors which read:

“It is deepest regret that we have to inform all of our loyal customers that this store is closing.”

“We have thoroughly enjoyed serving you all, team King Street.”

Customers will need to head over to the next closest Costa on Fremlin Walk, Maidstone, approximately 0.2 miles away, for their coffee from next week.

A Costa Coffee Spokesperson said: “The Costa Coffee store on King Street, Maidstone will close its doors for trade on the 20th of January 2024.

"Our talented team from the store will be re-deployed to nearby Costa Coffee’s in the local area."

Locals took to Facebook to share their frustration at the news with many citing high rents as a contributing factor.

One user said: “The town will be devastated.”

“Bloody hell, they are all shutting,” cried someone else.

A third user protested: “Rents are too high.”

“It will be another bar or nail bar,” claimed a fourth user.

The coffee chain has seen a string of closures over the past few months.

Last week a branch in Buckinghamshire closed for good.

In November Costa closed its cafe in Church Street, Malvern, Worcestershire and its branch in one of the UK’s biggest airports, Gatwick Airport South Terminal

The coffee chain also closed a branch in Newport, Wales last October and its Church Street Oakham branch in September.

Many high-street retailers have been struggling to get by over the past few years.

Energy costs have risen and shoppers are choosing to order online rather than head into stores.

This has left some retailers grappling with tight budgets and having no choice but to close stores to cut costs.

Patisserie Valerie has already closed 170 branches in the past few months.

Taco Bell who hasn't been on the scene long, pulled down the shutters on a drive-thru restaurant in Aberdeen.

Even Wetherspoon has struggled to brace the storm with 40 pubs closing down last and as many as 20 preparing to shut this year.
