OREO fans are being sent into a spin after the world’s most famous cookie revealed it’s ditching its iconic round shape.

The biscuit giant confirmed the shock news after weeks of online whispers, with its UK and Ireland Instagram account dropping cryptic hints about the dramatic "shape-shift."

Oreo is a cookie that sandwiches a sweet fondant filling between two cocoa biscuits.

The cookie's signature circular design is set to change as the brand have unveiled a new square-shaped prototype.

While snack lovers might be itching to take a bite, Oreo hasn't yet revealed where shoppers can get their hands on them.

A spokesperson for Oreo teased: “We love playfulness here at Oreo, so why not play with our iconic shape?

"We look forward to our fans seeing Oreo from a new angle.”

They added: “We can’t reveal more just yet, but plans are taking shape. Snacking fans should keep their eyes peeled for more—and we’ll be sure to circle back on the mystery soon.”

The sneak peek of the revamped cookie has already caused a stir online, with fans flocking to social media to share their shock at the biscuit’s bold new look.

One fan joked: “What’s next, a triangular Jaffa Cake?”

Another declared: “This changes everything!”

The surprise revamp follows a similar shake-up from Doritos, which recently hinted its famous triangular tortilla crisps could be going square.

Its understood that the iconic round cookie will still be available for purchase.

Oreo currently retail across all major supermarkets nationwide and can be purchased from 80p for a pack of six and £1.50 for a pack of 14.

Currently, Oreo sits as the world's best-selling cookie.

The chocolate sandwich cookie has been sold in over 100 countries since 1912.

This isn't the first time the brand has experimented with its iconic cookie.

Oreo has previously launched different flavours of its cookies before, including Pumpkin Spice, Peanut butter, Blueberry ice cream, Toffee Crunch, and even Birthday Cake.
