Lidl has unveiled plans for a new warehouse in Peterborough in a move that will create 500 jobs.

The site will become Lidl UK's largest warehouse in Britain to date.

It is also the sixth new distribution centre to be announced within the past year.

The retailer confirmed that the new warehouse - which is its 15th in the country - is part of its wider expansion plans that will see it invest £1.45 billion in its national operations between 2017 and 2018.

Lidl's head of warehouse expansion Adrienne Howells said the company is "very excited" about the proposed Regional Distribution Centre in Peterborough.

She said: "Our expansion across the UK is progressing rapidly and it’s important we have the right supply chain infrastructure to support this.

"Peterborough is ideally located and we're pleased to be bringing more jobs to the local community."

Lidl has not yet  announced an opening date but is currently preparing its planning application for the site.

Since coming to the UK in 1994, Lidl has grown consistently and has more than 640 stores in England, Scotland and Wales.

The budget store recently confirmed that it was starting construction on a Doncaster warehouse as well as a new Scottish site, as it relocates to a larger estate.

Plans are also in the works for a Bolton distribution centre, as well as the relocation of its Weston-super-Mare distribution centre to Avonmouth.

Last month the Sun revealed that nearly £1 in £8 of supermarket spending is at Aldi and Lidl.

This compares to just £1 in every £25 a decade ago.

Lidl is now the fastest growing supermarket, with sales up 19.2 per cent in three months, according to the latest figures from Kantar Worldpanel.

The cut-price supermarket has shaken up the supermarket sector by providing premium goods like wagyu steak and champagne at discount prices.

It also teamed up with fashion icon and TV celebrity Heidi Klum to curate "high-end fashion for less."

It's most recent offers included a 22-year-old single malt whisky that cost just - £39.99 - a fraction of the price of other whiskys of the same age.

As well as a ready-to-eat Katsu chicken curry inspired by the popular dish from Wagamama's for two at home, for less than £3.
