Sky TV package overhaul will massively change channels offered to viewers – here’s how it affects you

Sky is replacing their TV packages with a whole new range and the new deal means basic customers will get extra channels

SKY is making a massive change to its TV packages, giving customers on the cheapest packages more channels.

The new system will also make it much easier for customers to switch between deals during the length of their contract.

The changes will be rolled out for existing customers in January, but there's no obligation to switch

The telecoms giant is replacing its current Original bundle with a new Sky Entertainment package, which includes and extra 80 channels for the same price.

These channels include MTV, Sky Atlantic, Discovery and National Geographic.

At present the new deal is only available to new customers joining Sky but by the end of January it will be available to Sky's 12 million households.

Customers can also stick with their existing package if they're happy and there is no obligation to switch.

As part of the changes customers can add a Kids, HD or Boxsets bundle to their basic package for an extra £5 per month.

The add-ons can be removed by giving 31 days' notice.

In the past customers who opted for extra channels were locked in for up to 18 months, until the end of their contract.

Customers will also be able to add a Sky Cinema and Sports package to Sky Entertainment and have the option of taking them on a fixed term contract or rolling contract basis.

The changes will only apply to Sky's customers, so if you get channels via another provider, such as Virgin Media, then these changes won't affect you.

In January, Sky announced it would offer a full pay TV service without a dish in order to fend off competition from rivals.

In August, the telecoms giant and announced a new loyalty scheme where it rewarded its longest-serving customers with free broadband, upgrades, Sky Q and early access to TV shows.
