SWEDE DREAMS

Ikea’s new deal to end bedtime tug of war on single duvets isn’t as good as you might think

The Tog-ether bundle has been created to help the bedtime tug of war but shoppers would be better off buying single duvets

IKEA has launched a duvet offer in a bid to stop the bedtime "battle of the bedsheets".

The home furnishing firm, which has more than 20 stores across the UK, is now selling two duvets together in place of a double one.

The inspiration behind the new duvet came from Sweden, where couples regularly use "double/single duvets" in a bid to get a good night's kip.

Couples will be able to choose either a 7.5 TOG or 12 TOG for their side of the aptly-named "TOG-ether duvet", which is being rolled out across IKEA stores from Saturday 27 January.

This weekend shoppers will pay for a maximum of £40 instead of £50 for two 12 TOG RODTOPPA single duvets when they shop in store.

But savvy shoppers will have noticed that Ikea sells single duvets of a similar thickness for just £8.

Ikea claims that its RÖDTOPPA duvets are more expensive as they use sustainable materials.

Bosses at the store decided to launch the offer after research found that half of all Brits regular lose sleep because of their partners.

But how many people would actually buy two single ones for their bedroom? Ikea recons its on to a winner.

A total of 40 per cent told them that they were either too cold or too hot at night because their partner preferred a different TOG rating to them, and 10 per cent said their partner pinched the covers from them during the night, with 21 per cent blaming their other half for snoring.

A quarter of Brits go to bed earlier than they would like to in a desperate bid to get more ZZZs.

Just over half of the women polled said they often ended up sleeping on the sofa or in the spare room because of a "duvet war", with one-third of men saying they regularly stormed off to sleep in another room.

A total of 61 per cent of Brits said they often felt knackered because of a bad night's sleep - with the average Brit losing just over an hour a night.

Emelie Sandberg, the creative leader at IKEA, said: "The research has shown that 6.5m Brits are having trouble sleeping.

"We sleep differently - some people get really, really warm and some people don't get as warm, so we use two duvets because we really want to be able to offer the best night's sleep.

"So, with our TOG-ether bundle you get two single duvets - now is 7.5 TOG and one is 12 TOG. so both partners can be at the right temperature.

"So, couples of Britain, we'd like to encourage you to sleep the Swedish way and have a wonderful night - every night.

Carol McSeveny, the textiles boss at IKEA, said: "Many of us find that not getting a good night’s sleep is becoming a regular occurrence.

"Getting enough sleep is of utmost important for us to remain healthy and optimise our wellbeing.

"This is why we have introduced this traditional Swedish sleep trend of using two single duvets instead of a double, in UK stores for a short period, allowing couples to select a duvet from the bundle that suits them.”

Last year Ikea introduced a virtual reality app that lets shoppers try out furniture in their home before they buy it.
