FREE PARKING

‘I pay more than that for a trip to the shops’ cry locals as shopping centre car park goes up for sale for £1

However, you won't make much money off it in its current form

YOU can now own a shopping centre car park for just a pound thanks to a bizarre new auction.

The site is a bit out of the way but can be snapped up for less than the cost of an hour's parking in most towns.

Two car parks have now gone up for sale in the retail park serving the quiet Welsh village of Tonteg, near Cardiff.

Aerial photos show the two tarmacked areas with space for about 30 motors adjoining the shopping space.

They are being auctioned by Steel & Co, with the freehold on offer, meaning buyers would own the land itself.

The park sits at the end of a busy residential road with a supermarket, a hairdressers and a fish and chip shop.

Unbelievably, there is no reserve price on the sale, with only a minimum bid of £1 to buy it.

Local shopper Val Lewis, 58, was amazed at how cheap the offering was.

She said: "I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the car park was up for sale.

"I can pay £5 or £6 when I go for a quick shopping trip into Cardiff so it would be amazing to buy a whole car park for a pound."

However, those looking to keep it in its current form are unlikely to make much of a profit despite the bargain price.

Parking is free at the site so that would not be a source of revenue for the next owner.

Nonetheless, the auction house pointed out that the site "may be suitable for development" as long as it can secure the correct planning permission.

The auction will take place at midday on February 5.

It comes after petrolheads were given a glimpse inside the 300-car collection of the King of Malaysia - including a unique motor given to his family by Adolf Hitler.

Meanwhile, a driving expert urged Brits to buy an "iconic" Land Rover model available for just £4,000.
