trim, impressive and bags of space

We review the SpaceTourer Business Blue HDi 150 from price to economy and all its features

AS our lives become ever busier, so the demands on our everyday runarounds increase.
But folk who lug around mountain bikes, load up with canoes and cram three kids in the car at weekends are limited in their choice. The MPV market is hardly packed with options.

Volkswagen has long been the go-to for van-like space in a package that feels as familiar to drive as a normal car. But there is a hefty premium to pay.

There is more cabin space and boot volume

Now Citroen thinks it can pinch some sales with its new SpaceTourer. It is based on the same platform as the new Dispatch van range, which shares many of the same underpinnings as the C4 Grand Picasso, making it much more car-like. There is more cabin space and boot volume, all vehicles will get Citroen’s latest 7in touchscreen infotainment system and the range will feature five, seven and eight seaters.

Those seats can be folded and stowed away, so it is possible to transport a few mates with their kit and leave nothing behind.

A motorised side door with hands-free access requires only the waggle of a foot under the corner of the rear bumper.

Key Facts

  • Price: £33,300
  • Engine: 1,997cc, 4-cyl turbo diesel
  • Economy: 53.3mpg
  • Emissions: 139g/km
  • 0-62mph: 11 secs
  • Top speed: 106mph
  • Length: 5 metres

Prices for the mid-sized family friendly “Feel” trim model, with all mod cons, start at less than £30,000, undercutting the big Volkswagen by at least £5,000. Even the largest eight-seater SpaceTourer will not cost you more than £32,000.

The French marque has revised its engine range so they are Blue HDi diesels.

That means 55.4mpg and 133g/km of CO2 in mid-range 115hp models and an impressive 53.3mpg and 139g/km of CO2 in the punchier 150hp variant.

It drives well, with plenty of sound insulation

It drives well, with plenty of sound insulation, and the chassis doesn’t wallow through the corners. But it is a bit unsettled on rough roads.

Citroen has also kitted this thing out with the latest driver-assist systems, such as blind-spot warning and lane-departure assist.

In addition there is the latest parking sensor technology, a head-up display for digital speed readouts as well as Apple CarPlay or MirrorLink smartphone compatibility.
It is arguably more pleasant to look at than the similarly priced Toyota Proace and better to drive than the Ford Tourneo Custom models.

So if you are looking for bags of space without admitting you need a commercial vehicle, the Citroen SpaceTourer should be on your shopping list.
