We review the Ford Edge from price to economy and all its features

THERE’S an interesting group of letters stamped on the back of the new Ford Edge.

FoMoCo. It stands for Ford Motor Company. But FOMO also means “fear of missing out”.

5

A modern syndrome where people fear everyone else is having a good time — and they’re not. So they do everything.

That’s why Ford will have a family of FIVE crossover/SUVs in showrooms in the next three years.

SUV sales are exploding — up 25 per cent at 640,000 last year — and Ford wants to be right there at party central.

5

So on top of the baby EcoSport, Kuga and big daddy Edge you see here, two as-yet unnamed crossovers will follow.

Ford isn’t just dipping a toe in the water, then. It’s jumping in head first.

Now let’s talk Edge. What is it?

The Edge is a fresh XL-sized SUV built by our Canadian cousins. Not to be confused with a cramped 5-plus-2-seater, this is a proper five-seat family wagon B-I-G on space.

5

I had Peter Crouch’s stunt double with me in the front passenger seat (6ft 4in Louis, my snapper) and there was still room for a six-footer behind him. And, as you can see, the giant boot can easily swallow NINETY 5ft logs.

Ford will tell you the Edge is bigger than the Audi Q7 and Volvo XC90 in the back — for the price of a Q5 or XC60.

So how much is it? Prices start at £29,995 — or £299 a month on finance.

5

Hmmm, just four grand cheaper than the Jaguar F-Pace, did I hear you say? Yep, the bare bones of a Jag, in 2WD.

But even the basic Edge Zetec has intelligent all-wheel drive, rearview camera, 8in touchscreen, 19in alloys, privacy glass, traffic sign recognition and auto emergency braking.

Of course, the Edge can’t match the Jag, Audi or Volvo for class inside. But it has the same clean dash as the S-Max and it’s as comfy as an armchair.

5

The sweet spot is the Titanium trim at £32,245. That adds keyless entry, heated seats, 220V plug socket, powered tailgate and clever noise cancelling kit. Load up with the panoramic roof too.

Now for the oily bits. The Edge is only available as a 2-litre diesel — either 180hp manual or 210hp six-speed auto. Neither would win a drag race.

But they’re not supposed to.

This is a family cruiser with a relaxed ride, easy steering and decent 48mpg for such a big bird. As for looks, it stands out with that macho “Superman” grille. I like it. Coming soon to the Kuga too.

VERDICT: Nice wheels but I’d spend my £30k on a Focus RS. YOLO, mo fo.
