DRIVERS have been hit by rush-hour chaos as a crucial route used by 50,000 every day is closed due to a lorry crash.

Thousands of commuters are sat in gridlocked traffic due to the closure, which has sparked "severe" delays.

The southbound Blackwall Tunnel in east London has been closed due to a lorry crash with long delays expected.

Huge queues have been spotted on the A12 from Hackney with more expected to form.

The popular tunnel has been shut since 8.30am today with long queues building up since the collision.

Motorists have been urged to divert as the Rotherhithe Tunnel and Tower will be clogged due to the closure.

Transport for London's taxi & private hire service said there is also traffic on Newham Way.

On X, it posted: "Traffic is static southbound with delays back to East Cross Route.

"Traffic is also slow moving westbound with delays on Newham Way.

"Use other routes if possible."

There were no reports of injuries after the collision, cops revealed.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: "Police were called at around 8.50am on Monday (March 10) to reports of collision in the southbound Blackwall Tunnel.

"A lorry collided with part of the tunnel.

"No reports of any injuries.

"The southbound tunnel remains closed while the incident is dealt with.

"Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible."
