THESE shocking images show the moment a 13 foot long great white was pulled from the ocean - with bite marks from an even bigger predator.

Vimy the shark was caught by researchers off the coast of Nova Scotia in the US earlier this month, measuring in at an enormous four metres in length.

It is possible Vimy was bitten by another male over a mate - or even by a bigger female who didn't want to mate

However, despite his hefty size, Vimy was covered in scars - the most noticeable being a bloody wound along his head.

US-based OCEARCH, who caught the predator, said that despite Vimy being one of the biggest they have captured, the bites must have been from a shark measuring 14 feet at a minimum.

VIOLENT MATING

Founding chairman Chris Fischer said to the McClatchy news group: "It was clear that something had just grabbed his entire head.

"It was a very large animal that grabbed it, something significantly bigger … anything that can grab an animal like that by the head is pretty impressive".

He added that it was possible Vimy had been bitten by another male over a mate - or even by a bigger female who didn't want to mate.

Mr Fischer said: "We do know that shark mating is very violent. Sharks biting each other in the head is not a new thing. This is an everyday part of their life."

Earlier in their expedition, the team also tagged a female shark measuring in at 4.7 metres in length.

Naming her Unama'ki, they said she was the second biggest shark they had ever managed to capture - beaten only by 4.87 metre Mary Lee in Cape Cod.

The largest shark they had ever seen was a 5.18 metre great white, but he escaped before they could tag him.

In UK in July, two huge sharks weighing over 500lbs were caught off the south coast, backing up reports that British waters are teeming with the fearsome fish.

The pair of porbeagle sharks - a relative of the deadly Great White - were caught by anglers Adam Carter and Matt Mizen about seven miles off Portland, Dorset.
