A MUM is serving life in prison after killing her young daughter in a bid to spite her ex-husband.

Lisa Batstone, 41, suffocated her daughter Teagan, 8, and bundled her body into the back of a car in 2014 with the intention of taking her own life.

She was later arrested and jailed for the killing, which took place years after she and Teagan's dad Gabe split in 2008, divorcing two years later in 2010.

The couple went their separate ways, with Gabe moving to Ottawa, and Lisa remaining in Surrey, Canada, with custody of their little girl.

DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY

Years later, Gabe had remarried to a woman named Stephanie and in 2012, they had a little boy.

Lisa, however, was struggling with depression and anxiety and in the same year, she attempted to take her own life.

Teagan was sent to live with her dad, but was later returned to her mum when she had recovered and was deemed safe to care for the little girl.

Gabe attempted to regain custody of Teagan, but his request was denied.

ENDLESS TEXTS

According to , in 2014, Gabe began receiving endless texts, calls and emails from his ex wife claiming there had been an emergency - but when he would respond, she would argue with him and hang up.

Later that year in December, Gabe had been to visit his daughter and dropped her off at school in Surrey before he left to head back to Ottawa.

After doing so, he received a text from Lisa saying "It seems you’d rather I disappeared". He didn't know what she meant.

Later that evening, Lisa told Teagan that they were going to camp in their living room, making up makeshift beds.

Then the following morning, the mum text her ex-husband saying their daughter was unwell so would not be going to school.

At lunchtime, police received a 911 call stating a woman had crashed her car into a ditch.

BODY IN THE BOOT

When they arrived at the scene, they found the driver's seat empty - and Lisa curled up in the boot cradling Teagan's dead body and a kitchen knife.

According to officers, Lisa kept repeating "I just wanna die" and said she wanted her little girl to be with Jesus. She blamed the incident on her struggle with mental health.

Following a two-hour interview, police determined Lisa had killed Teagan to spite Gabe and ensure he didn't get custody if she took her own life.

She had suffocated the schoolgirl with a plastic bag and then placed the body in the car with the intention of crashing and killing herself.

In 2018, she pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder, however in March this year she was found guilty and was sentenced to life with a minimum of 15 years in September.

Justice Catherine Murray said Lisa had breached Teagan’s trust in the worst possible way.

Lisa, who is now appealing her sentence, read a statement in court before being jailed.

She said: "I’d give anything to go back and change what happened. Each morning, I wake up to this excruciating nightmare and I don’t know how this can be real. I miss my sweet girl so much.

"I cannot believe I did what I did – but I know her death is my fault."

Gabe and wife Stephanie have since set up Teagan's Voice, a national advocacy organisation focused on advocating for children’s rights.
