New Tory MP will work his old job over Christmas as he doesn’t want to let down his former colleagues

A NEW Tory MP will work his old job 12 hours a day over Christmas as he doesn’t want to let down his former colleagues.

Chemical process operator Jacob Young was elected in Redcar as part of the Tories’ destruction of Labour’s northern Red Wall.

His bosses agreed to release him to his new job immediately.  But Jacob, 26, insisted on doing his scheduled shifts — including 7am to 7pm on Christmas Day — so that none of his old pals were called in instead.

He told The Sun: “I felt it was the least I could do.

“They have been really flexible with me and people have had to cover my shifts on short notice.

“While the House isn’t sitting, I can work these last few rostered shifts so no one else who wasn’t expecting to work is made to.”

Jacob overturned a 9,485 Labour majority in the election to win the North Yorkshire seat the Tories had never previously held.

Even he said the result came as “a shock to quite a few of us” with exit polls suggesting Labour held on.

The Middlesbrough-born MP added: “During the campaign we felt we had run Labour close, but it wasn’t until we got to the count that it became clear we had done it.

“It was a very humbling feeling.”

Jacob, who stood unsuccessfully in the 2015 election, will formally leave the petrochemical firm based at Wilton International on January 1.

He added: “New year, new me.

“I’ll start the New Year when my sole focus will be on delivering for the people of Redcar.”

The Sun says

THREE cheers to the heroic new Tory MP for Redcar, Jacob Young.

The ex-chemical plant worker has volunteered to work the 12-hour holiday shifts he was down for to save his mates from being dragged in over Christmas.

This humble 26-year-old has a hell of a lot to teach his more experienced parliamentary colleagues.

Rebecca Long-Bailey — the Labour leader wannabe who’s been caught out telling shameless porkies about the struggles she went through growing up — should listen particularly carefully.

Middle-class politicians whining about how tough they once had it might win over a few gullible students.

But if Labour MPs want to earn back the respect of working-class Northerners they cast aside to drool over Corbyn, it’s time to take a leaf out of Jacob Young’s book.
