NHS reveal areas with highest prescriptions for alcohol addiction – and the North East is worst affected

ENGLAND’S booze battle hotspots have been revealed in figures showing areas with the most prescriptions for alcohol addiction.
Doctors often dish out medication to those struggling to stay off drink — and six of the ten worst affected places are in the North West.
The drugs soften the urge to hit the bottle.
In parts of the North West, almost five times the national average number of them are prescribed.

And NHS figures obtained by The Sun on Sunday show that last year Salford, Gtr Manchester, was the area with the highest number — 1,403 prescriptions for every 100,000 people.
The rate is about 60 times that in the lowest area — Horsham and Mid Sussex.
Rosanna O’Connor, of Public Health England, said: “It is important that people get the right treatment when they most need it.”
