Girl, 3, dead after ‘accidental and self-inflicted’ gunshot

A THREE-YEAR-OLD girl was found dead after an "accidental" and "self-inflicted" gunshot at a suburban home in south Louisville.

Officers found the little girl, identified as Fayth Graham, suffering from a gunshot wound at her family home in New Albany, Indiana, on the Kentucky border, just after 2pm on Sunday.

The toddler was taken to Norton Children's Hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

Louisville police spokesman Dwight Mitchell told he did not know who was with the child when the shooting occurred, but said he did not believe she was home alone.

It is unclear whether the girl's parents will be charged in connection to the shooting, Mitchell said.

He added: "We're still in the very early stages of the investigation, and really, at this point, that's way down the line.

"Our main concern is to find out why this young child was in the state that she ultimately found herself in ... Obviously we'll continue the investigation; we'll gather all that information, then we'll consult down the line to see if charges would be appropriate in this case."

According to a dispatcher with MetroSafe, the shooting was believed to be accidental and "self-inflicted."

Earlier this year, a toddler was shot in the head in Chicago while his parents argued and struggled over a gun which accidentally fired.

Travis McCoy and Adriana Smith were fighting about finding another place to live when the weapon fell from his jacket.

The gun went off as they both tried to grab a hold of it, according to authorities.

The bullet ricocheted and hit their son in in the side of the head.

And a young boy who accidentally shot his two-year-old sister while playing with his dad's gun turned the firearm on himself in a fit of despair, it was reported.

The boy, 11, is said to have died instantly while his younger sister passed away in hospital in Empangeni, South Africa.
