He revealed that 52 people lost their lives in hospitals and 21 died in nursing homes - making the total of 73 New Yorkers the lowest single-day figure since the start of the coronavirus outbreak.

"That's the lowest level we have seen since this started. In this absurd new reality, that is good news," Cuomo said.

“Any other time and place when we lose 73 New Yorkers, it’s tragic. It’s tragic now.”

The death toll dropped from 109 on Sunday and 96 on Monday.

It's a significant difference to mid-April when new death numbers peaked at 800.

"We went up the mountain very quickly... it took a long time to come down," Cuomo added.

The overall state death toll is now at lease 23,561 - with the number of new confirmed cases down to approximately 200.

Cuomo also said the number of new coronavirus hospitalizations across the state was also now at its lowest.

He also stressed the importance social distancing to further prevent the spread of the virus.

“It’s simple, it’s wash your hands, it’s socially distance, it’s use the hand sanitizer and it is wear the mask, Cuomo said.

“This is almost a point of cultural communication. Wearing a mask is now cool, I believe it’s cool."

The daily briefing was held Tuesday at the New York Stock Exchange - the same day Wall Street traders for the first time in two months.

Cuomo rang in the start of the trading day and praised New Yorkers for bending the curve and slowing the spread of Covid-19.

The floor will follow six-feet social distancing guidelines and allow fewer traders on the floor at a time - who are required to wear masks.
