Mr Barrett was returning to John Grooms Court care home in Norwich when the despicable thief approached him at a city centre bus stop in Castle Meadow demanding money.

When the disabled man refused to hand it over the opportunist criminal pinched it anyway - reaching into his coat and grabbing the wallet before making off.

Mr Barrett said: "I feel absolutely disgusted by it.

"I was shaking with shock when I got back.

"I want the guy prosecuted and taken to court."

He added: "I don't want this ever happening to any other disabled people."

The 36-year-old said he was on his way home from visiting friends in Taverham, Norfolk, when the mugger struck.

He said the black leather wallet, which was a present from a friend for his birthday, contained a £10 note and two £1 coins as well as his bus pass - leaving stranded with no way of getting home.

The shocked wheelchair user added: "He made out he was a homeless person.

"He said to me: 'I need a pound because I need somewhere to stay'.

"I can't believe a homeless person would take off a disabled person."

Mr Barrett alerted police after his care home, where he's lived 11 years, arranged for him to be picked up by a taxi.

Cops are now urging any eye-witnesses to the crime, which happened at about 8.50pm on Monday night, to come forward.

PC Michael Pearce, of Norfolk Police, said: "This is a sickening crime where a vulnerable member of our community has been targeted by a callous thief.

"It is believed there may have been a number of people in the area when the incident took place.

"I'd urge anyone who may have seen anything to contact police."

The vile mugger is believed to be white, tall, and had very short brown hair.

He was wearing white jeans, black leather jacket, black trainers and a grey beanie hat.

Anyone with information should contact PC Pearce at Bethel Street Police Station, Norwich, on 101, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
