Basil Fawlty for Brexit?

Our beloved fictional characters are set against each other in an EU referendum poll with some surprising results

Issues such as how will Brexit affect security and small businesses were clearly on the minds of voters who took part in the YouGov survey

Jim Royle and the Vicar of Dibley

POSTMAN Pat has a black and white cat but how would he vote in the EU referendum and would couch potato Jim Royle even get off the sofa to cast his ballot?

These are the issues YouGov has been asking voters to get to grips with in their poll about how people think fictional characters would vote.

Yes, now Hollywood stars like Benedict Cumberbatch and Emma Thompson have come out in favour of remain, and Michael Caine have said he wants to leave, it’s time for Del Boy and James Bond to get a look in.

YouGov asked voters how they thought 30 different fictional characters might vote on June 23rd.
Geraldine Granger, better known as The Vicar of Dibley, tops the list as most likely to vote Remain.

She is followed by establishment figure Sir Humphrey Appleby, from the 1980s political sitcom Yes Minister, and the practically perfect Mary Poppins.

Doctor Who, a man with the advantage of having seen the future, has a Net-Remain score of +9 with 23% thinking he would to vote Remain and 14% thinking he would vote to Leave.

With defence and security being a key theme of the referendum campaign on both sides, people surveyed think James Bond would be backing a Remain vote.

On the other side, 16 of the characters named are thought to be backing Brexit.

They include hotel owner Basil Fawlty, Home Guard platoon commander Captain Mainwaring and couch potato Jim Royle from the Royle Family.

Polls suggest the over 65 age group are the most likely to vote leave and this could explain why people polled have put Catherine Tate’s character Joannie Taylor, or “Nan”, firmly in the Leave camp.

Figures suggest Scots are more likely to support staying in the EU, but in this poll just 11% think Groundskeeper Willie, from The Simpsons, would vote Remain compared to 23% who think he would vote Leave.

The results for some of the characters aren’t so clear cut though with Bob the Builder dividing public opinion.

Out of the people polled 22% thought he would vote Remain and 21% thought he would vote to Leave.

And David Brent from The Office is a Brexiteer by a very narrow margin, with 23% saying he would go with Remain, compared to 24% putting him in the Leave camp.

Mr Bean is the character perceived as least likely to vote with nearly a quarter thinking he would have problems making it to the polling station.

He is followed by Staines Gangster Ali G.

YouGov previously tried this experiment in 2012 where they asked how some of the characters might vote in a general election.

Basil Fawlty and Alan Partridge were both thought of as being Tory voters, while Del Boy and Jim Royale were seen as voting Labour.
