The dad-of-two said: “When saw him coming out the water and we couldn’t believe it - he was about 9 feet long and moved surprisingly fast for a creature that size.

“The greenkeeper waved us over to take a photo with him as he was very placid.”

The amazing animal, reportedly known as 'Coco', is a resident at the Excellence Playa Mujeres hotel and is fed every day on the course by staff.

Instead of fleeing the green, the intrepid tourist decided to get up close to the alligator and take a series of pictures.

Lamont, from Milton Keynes, took a selfie with the gator and a bemused co-worker.

The salesman became even braver and held the reptile’s tail for an incredible holiday snap.

Getting cheeky, Lamont held up two fingers in a ‘peace’ sign above the gator’s head.

Two of his friends got in on the fun as the three men posed with the chilled out alligator.

Lamont held up his fingers in a ‘rock and roll’ gesture while his colleagues stuck up their thumbs in delight.

But the fun photoshoot took a dangerous turn when the alligator was angered by the camera flash.

He lunged at happy snapper Lamont while he was trying to get the perfect picture of the reptile.

He said: “Foolishly, I lay down on the grass to take a selfie with him. He was startled by the shutter noise on my camera and took a few steps towards me.

“I don’t think I’ve ever moved quicker in my life!

“My kids are 12 and 21, and they thought Dad was really cool for once.

“My parents were less impressed though, they think I’m setting a bad example. And my wife Nicola was there at the time - she thought it was rather childish.”

In November 2013, a Brit tourist almost lost his life after an alligator attacked him on a Cancun golf course.

Dougie Thomson, 58, was rushed to hospital after the vicious reptile got a hold of his right thigh on the Iberostar Cancun Golf Course.
