A WILD bear opens the door of a car as the terrified family let out a terrified scream, in this hair-raising footage.

Luckily the father is able to yank the door closed and the driver slams their foot on the accelerator before the black bear can join them inside.

But not before the unsuspecting family got the shock of their lives when the animal realised their car door was unlocked.

Sitting with his camera in hand, the father can be seen taking snaps of the bear as it approaches the passenger’s side.

One child in the back screams: “The bear’s right next to us.”

His father hushes him believing they are safe in the vehicle.

But as the bear rises to its hind legs, it leans on the handle, opening the door and leading to hysteria in the vehicle.

Black bears

The American black bear is the world's most comment species of bear.

The mammals number an estimated 600,000 and are spread across 40 states of the USA, Canada and Mexico.

They can grow up to seven feet long and weigh up to 300lb.

Black bears are less aggressive and smaller than grizzly bears, which also inhabit North America.

And although they have been known to kill humans, attacks are rare and they habitually feed on young deer and moose, as well as fruit, nuts and salmon.

Black bears will generally live for an average of 18 years in the wild.

They are capable at running of speeds of up to 30mph, can climb trees and are strong swimmers.

As the children scream the father is able to slam the door closed before the unseen driver slams their foot onto the accelerator and make a quick getaway.

There are an estimated 600,000 black bears in North America.

Although the species is considered less aggressive than the larger grizzly bear, it is still capable of killing a human and has been responsible for numerous attacks.
