Sir Philip Green buys new £48m private jet as thousands of former BHS workers face up to life on the dole

And his wife is spending £300,000 on decorating the interior

FORMER BHS tycoon Sir Philip Green has blown £48.4million on a private jet as thousands face the dole following the High Street giant’s collapse.

The Gulfstream G650ER is an upgrade on the exclusive plane the Monaco tax exile already owns.

And the 64-year-old has gone ahead with the 680mph purchase despite the £571million BHS pensions black hole.

A source said: “It’s the most luxurious private jet on the planet, the fastest of its kind. Most employees at BHS will struggle to even pay for a budget flight to Spain this summer.

“So the idea he’s splashing out on this will be hard to stomach.”

Sir Philip’s wife Lady Tina is to spend £300,000 re-designing the interior.

The G650ER boasts speeds of 680mph, just short of the speed of sound. To date only 181 have been made.

A Gulfstream spokesman said: “It is like an office in the sky.

“You can use your phone, it has four living areas and 100 per cent fresh air which is refreshed every two minutes, so you land feeling rejuvenated.”

As MPs called for the Topshop fat cat to be stripped of his knighthood over his handling of BHS, questions about Lady Tina’s finances have emerged.

She is expected to be called before MPs.

On Wednesday her husband got into a heated exchange with MPs over his decision to sell BHS for £1 last year to a group headed by twice bankrupt Dominic Chappell.

The couple own a £100million super yacht, two other yachts, speedboat, helicopter and a Gulfstream G550 luxury plane.

Asked for comment on his new acquisition last night, Sir Philip said: “I don’t want to talk to you, is that clear? Goodbye.
