Nine cops injured trying to close down illegal rave of 2,000 people in London

MISSILES were hurled at officers, hospitalising four of the injured lawmen

NINE police officers have been injured while trying to shut down an illegal rave attended by thousands in London.

Four of the injured cops were hospitalised after the 2,000 strong horde of ravers launched missiles at them.

Glass bottles and other objects were also thrown at police as a helicopter circled above.

Five police constables, two police sergeants and two dog handlers were hurt - but none were seriously injured.

1,000 people were discovered outside the the building hosting the unlicensed music event with a further 1,000 revellers found inside.

Authorities were called to the chaotic scenes at 9.45pm on Saturday and riot quads wielding shields and truncheons closed in on the venue on Thames Road, Barking.

It took several hours for police to clear the site, police said, but the building was finally emptied by 2am.

Road closures around the area will remain in place for the rest of Sunday and officers are still patrolling the scene.

Temporary Chief Superintendent Sean Wilson said: "A number of officers were injured whilst going about their duties and this will not be tolerated."

"A full investigation has been launched and we will endeavour to bring those responsible to justice.

"We are working very closely with the community who are shocked by these events."

Scotland Yard confirmed nine people have been arrested in connection with the disturbances.
