Angela Taylor, 54, and grave digger partner Paul Cannon, 55, hatched a grisly plot to kill 69-year-old Bill Taylor after developing a "venomous hatred" for him.

The pair enjoyed a fantasy world of "violence and sex" and shared lurid WhatsApp messages with each other in the weeks leading up to the farmer's death.

After being found guilty of his murder and sentenced to life in prison, the gruesome 2018-19 investigation into the disappearance of the Gosmore farmer airs tonight on Sky Crime's Killer In My Village.

On June 3, 2018, Mr Taylor was last seen alive by his grandson Ben, who had taken him for a Sunday roast.

He was reported missing from his home the following day.

In the days after his disappearance, Cannon sold a Suzuki 4x4 for cash before the vehicle ended up in Bulgaria, while Taylor got rid of her mobile phone.

The farmer's body was found half buried in mud, in a river in Hitchin on February 10, 2019. Alongside him was an empty bottle of Bailey's - to make it look as though he'd killed himself.

In court, jurors heard how the couple had sent graphic messages in the 48 hours before Mr Taylor vanished.

Cannon told his lover: "I'll kill for you darling. Man I get so scared of losing you … I'll never find anyone like you again and I'll never want anyone."

The pair also repeatedly discussed sexual fantasies of showering together as blood ran down the drain, jurors heard.

They also discussed tying Mr Taylor to a chair and making love in front of him.

Jurors were told Bill had refused to grant his wife of 20 years a divorce - causing Cannon and Taylor to develop a "bitter, pervasive hatred" for the landowner.

The gruesome pair then shared fantasies of showering together as Bill's blood ran down the drain and cutting his ligaments and fingers off.

In the months leading up to the slaughter, Cannon told Taylor he would "kill for" her and was afraid of losing her.

He went on to say: "You know what I'd like to do ... make love to you on his kitchen table with your p***y soaked in blood with him tied to a chair so he had to watch !!!!!!!

"Then send him to hell."

On the night the landowner vanished, he told Taylor he was "just watching Kill Bill 2 lol", with her replying "1 would be nice" with several smiling emojis.

Taylor and Cannon tried claiming the 28,000 messages sent more than 148 days were pure sexual fantasy but jurors rejected their lies after just over 11 hours of deliberation.

During sentencing, Judge Michael Kay told the St Albans Crown Court the "primary reason as to why Angela Taylor and Paul Cannon would wish to kill him" appeared to have been her severe hatred of her ex.

He said: "Angela Taylor, in particular, loathed the very sight of William Taylor and felt that she could never be rid of him."

"Some of the deranged sexual and violent imagery, such as making love in the blood of their victims, was of course fantasy.

"However, their plan to kill William Taylor, to which they referred in the messages as Plan B, was real," said Judge Kay.

Herts Police says that Sky’s Killer In My Village looks closely at the murder investigation which was carried out by the Beds, Cambs and Herts Major Crime Unit.

The investigation became one of the most complicated in the unit’s history, involving vast numbers of police officers and numerous partner agencies in the UK and abroad.

In the documentary, viewers will hear from Detective Chief Inspector Carl Foster who led the investigation.

DCI Foster said: “The murder of Bill Taylor was callous and motivated by deep-rooted hatred and financial greed, despite Bill having gifted Angela considerable land and property.

“The investigation was incredibly challenging and securing the successful convictions of Taylor and Cannon required meticulous police work.

“The initial searching of Bill’s land alone took in excess of eight weeks to complete and was supported by police and volunteer resources from as far away as Merseyside and Devon and Cornwall.

“The sheer volume of information, intelligence and evidence painstakingly gathered by our detectives and forensic teams took over six months to reach a point sufficient to secure a charging decision."

He added: "While Angela Taylor and Paul Cannon are now rightfully facing justice behind bars, there is no doubt that Bill’s murder has left a huge void in his family and my thoughts remain with them as they try to rebuild their lives.”

There are also interviews and voice recordings from Bill’s family and friends, who are still coming to terms with the horror of what happened.

Most of the family do not feel ready to speak publicly about the ordeal but they are keen to stress that the impact of Bill’s murder is constant in their lives, say Herts Police.

Killer In My Village airs on Sky Crime at 9pm tonight, Wednesday December 30.
