Today he stopped by the service station while driving his Aston Martin - just one of a vast array of luxury cars the presenter owns.

Wearing the same outfit he has been pictured in for the past two days, he pumped his own gas before popping into the station to pay.

The 50-year-old made his fortune in the 1990s with a string of successful programmes before selling off his own company Ginger Productions.

Today he is thought to be worth about £50 million.

Announcing the news of his resignation on Twitter 24 hours ago, he claimed he had given it his "best shot" but standing aside was "the best thing I can do".

Presenting duties now fall to former Friends star Matt LeBlanc, whom audiences appeared to respond well to.

During the show's inaugural season with Evans at the helm, ratings and audiences plummeted.

Sunday's sixth and final episode saw the show - once the biggest in the BBC stable - rake in just 1.9 million viewers.

It marked a serious departure from lofty height attained under Jeremy Clarkson's stewardship.

The final episode with Clarkson and co-presenters James May and Richard Hammond drew in an audience of 8 million.

In a statement released yesterday, Evans said he had given the show "my best shot but sometimes that's not enough".

"The team are beyond brilliant, I wish them all the best. I feel like my standing aside is the single best thing I can now do to help the cause."

He also touched on his resignation this morning while hosting his regular Radio 2 breakfast show, telling his former production team it was time to "move on".

Evans resignation comes just days after police confirmed they were looking into historic allegations of sexual assault.

A female colleague of Evans' from the 1990s claimed he used to regular expose himself at work and touched her breasts.

Evans has said the claims are "ridiculous".

'I GAVE IT MY BEST': EVANS'S ANNOUNCEMENT

"Stepping down from Top Gear. Gave it my best shot but sometimes that's not enough. The team are beyond brilliant, I wish them all the best. Full steam ahead then with Radio 2, CarFest, Children In Need, 500 Words and whatever else we can dream up in the future.
"I have never worked with a more committed and driven team than the team I have worked with over the last twelve months. I feel like my standing aside is the single best thing I can now do to help the cause. I remain a huge fan of the show, always have been, always will be.
"I will continue to focus on my radio show and the allied events that it encompasses."

A friend has suggested the reason he quit was because he became sick of the criticism he received.

They told : “Every single day he has been accused of a different thing, all of which have been completely untrue. In the end you just think, ‘f*** off and die’.

“If the show had done better, perhaps the battering would have been less bad. But he just thinks doing this will make him and his family happier. It is as simple as that.”
