Jeremy Corbyn finds time to go to his allotment AGM despite being at the centre of a coup to remove him as Labour leader

As the plotters stall in their attempts it’s revealed he didn’t seem to be taking the leadership contest that seriously

JEREMY Corbyn took time out of his schedule to attend the AGM of his allotment association despite being at the centre of a coup to remove him as Labour leader.

The veteran leftie attended the meeting in north London as his own MPs plotted to unseat him.

But as the aborted coup stalls, perhaps Mr Corbyn was right not to take it seriously anyway.

Instead of coming up with a defence to claims he could no longer lead the party, he went along to the East Finchley Lot Association’s annual get together for members.

He has faced mounting calls for him to step down with open calls for his resignation from former Labour leaders and current colleagues, after dozens of his shadow cabinet ministers deserting him.

But Mr Corbyn has been very open about his love of his allotment, saying in an interview earlier this year, he said: "I enjoy growing things in my allotment and garden.

“This year the maize has done very well. It’s been a great year for maize."

He added: “I dug in lots and lots of manure in February for it.”

Mr Corbyn also revealed he grows potatoes, beans and pumpkins, and uses soft fruit from the plot to make jam which he gives to friends and family.

The 67-year-old pays about £65 per year for his plot at the in-demand allotments, with more than 100 people on the waiting list.

In another interview, he said: “I try to grow things that don’t require a lot of watering because I don’t get up there regularly enough.

“[But] I always make time for my allotment. You like a dry summer because the weeds don’t grow.

“You water what you need to water and the weeds can sod off.”

He might get more time to spend there is he is removed as Labour leader.

After news came out that his aides were allegedly preventing him from resigning, a petition was started to ‘free him’.

Its founder Martin Robbins wrote: “Jeremy Corbyn’s aides are allegedly preventing him from meeting with the elected deputy leader of the Labour Party, in case he resigns out of sheer unhappiness.

“Some in the party are even describing him as a ‘hostage’. This is clearly an inhumane situation.

“Corbyn should be released immediately, and allowed to return to the peace of his allotment with dignity.”

That seems unlikely though, after news emerged this morning one of the coup’s founders urged fellow schemers to lay down their knives.

This morning ex shadow work and pensions secretary Owen Smith called for more time as talks continue between Mr Corbyn, his deputy Tom Watson and union leaders.
