THE arson assault on a Romanian store in Norwich comes after a string of attacks on foreign businesses

It is the latest in a string of attacks on foreign businesses and immigrants since Britain voted to leave the EU a fortnight ago.

Horrified onlookers in a nearby takeaway desperately tried to wake the owner of the Romanian shop in Norwich as flames engulfed the store this morning.

The woman, who lives in a flat above the Village Shop, eventually woke up after hearing her plate-glass front window smash.

Witnesses smelled thick acrid smoke as the terrified owner dashed downstairs and called 999 after seeing ferocious flames at the front of the building.

Fire service experts and detectives have launched a joint investigation after the shocking incident and police are hunting the attackers.

The fierce blaze erupted after an incendiary device of some sort was thrown at the Village Shop store just before 3am today.

Norfolk Police are treating the fire as "suspicious" and have sealed off the battered shop.

Police forensic experts and fire brigade specialists were carrying out a thorough investigation at the devastated store today.

Shattered shards of glass from the shop's window littered the pavement, the door was smashed and piles of burnt food lay out on the street.

The shop's letterbox was blackened by smoke and fire damage.
