MID-AIR EMERGENCY

United Airlines flight from London to Chicago makes emergency landing in Edinburgh due to fuel problem

Flight 929 left London Heathrow this morning but declared an emergency as it flew over the north of England to the USA

A UNITED Airlines flight travelling from London to Chicago has made an emergency landing at Edinburgh after a fuel leak.

Flight 929 left London Heathrow at 7am this morning, before declaring a mid-air emergency as it flew over the north of England.

The plane dumped fuel as it circled above the Scottish city before starting its descent into Edinburgh Airport and landing safely.

It has now stopped at the end of the runway after the pilot requested an inspection.

Twitter reports suggest the captain believes there is a fuel issue that needs maintenance.

The Boeing 767-300 was about an hour into its flight when it decided to make an emergency landing.

It circled at 12,000ft before preparing to land in Edinburgh.

Other flights planning to land at the airport were held to allow the flight with fuel issues to land.

United Airlines tweeted the pilot decided to divert due to a "potential fuel issue that needs maintenance".

They said: "We will address the issue once landed, and have a flight on its way."

It added: "All passengers and crew are fine."

Twitter users commented on the emergency, with Marcus wishing the plane returns to ground safely.

He said: "Hoping a safe and smooth landing #UA929."
