Maurice Hunter, 80, had to turn round and head home less than an hour after landing in Spain.
He lost Carolyn, 70, after nipping to the loo at Stansted Airport and thought she had already boarded the Ryanair flight to Benidorm.
The couple, who have been married for 47 years, had booked separate seats as Maurice, who is 6ft 4in tall, wanted extra legroom.
On the plane he even waved at a woman he thought was his wife.
Maurice, a diabetic, only realised his mistake after landing.
